A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunsen depicting the kabuki actor Onoe Matsusuke in a dramatic samurai role.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunsen captures the actor Onoe Matsusuke in a dramatic pose, characteristic of the kabuki theatre tradition. Shunsen, a student of the Katsukawa school, focused his output on yakusha-e, or actor prints, which served as popular souvenirs for theatre-goers in Edo-period Japan. The composition centres on the actor, who is depicted mid-action with a sword raised above his head. His posture, with one hand extended and the other gripping the hilt, conveys the tension of a stage combat scene. The artist employs the distinctive Katsukawa style, which prioritises the accurate depiction of an actor's facial features and individual mannerisms over idealised beauty.
The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft earth tones, muted greys, and a subtle application of red around the eyes, which was a common convention in kabuki makeup to denote strength or villainy. The background is minimal, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the figure and his costume. The lines are precise and controlled, defining the folds of the kimono and the musculature of the actor's legs. This print offers a glimpse into the performance culture of the early nineteenth century, documenting the specific staging and costume choices of the era. The work is a fine example of the technical skill involved in the ukiyo-e process, where the collaboration between the artist, carver, and printer resulted in a clear, expressive image. The print reflects the conventions of the time, where the actor's identity and the specific role he played were the primary subjects of interest for the public.
