A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunkō II, depicting the kabuki actor Ichikawa Monnosuke II in a formal role.
This woodblock print depicts the kabuki actor Ichikawa Monnosuke II in the role of a lord. Produced by Katsukawa Shunkō II, a member of the Katsukawa school, the work exemplifies the yakusha-e genre, which focused on the portrayal of actors from the popular theatre of Edo-period Japan. The artist employs a refined line quality to define the actor's features and the folds of his elaborate costume, capturing a specific moment of dramatic tension.
The composition is balanced, with the figure positioned centrally against a minimalist architectural backdrop. The actor wears a kimono decorated with a repeating hexagonal pattern containing stylised chrysanthemum motifs, which adds visual texture to the garment. His posture, with one hand holding a fan and the other resting near his sword, suggests the authority and composure expected of a high-ranking character in a theatrical performance. The colour palette is restrained, relying on subtle earth tones and ink washes to create depth without the need for excessive saturation.
Katsukawa Shunkō II, also known as Shunsen, followed the stylistic conventions established by his predecessors in the Katsukawa school. These artists were known for their focus on individual likenesses, moving away from the more generic facial types seen in earlier ukiyo-e prints. This print provides a clear example of the technical precision involved in the production of Japanese woodblock prints during the late eighteenth century. The clarity of the lines and the deliberate use of negative space allow the viewer to focus on the actor's expression and the decorative elements of his attire. As a piece of historical documentation, it offers insight into both the fashion of the period and the aesthetic priorities of the ukiyo-e tradition.
