Aert van Waes
1620–1675 · Dutch

Aert van Waes

Aert van Waes spent his formative years in the Dutch Republic, yet his career path remains unusual for a seventeenth-century painter. While many contemporaries sought commissions from the wealthy merchant class, Van Waes focused on the fringes of society. He travelled to Italy in the 1640s, where he engaged with the Bamboccianti group. This collective of northern artists preferred to paint the common people, beggars, and street performers rather than the grand historical scenes popular at the time.

Biography

His technical approach relies on sharp, observational etching. In works such as De vagebond, Van Waes uses precise lines to define the physical form of his subjects. He avoids idealisation, choosing instead to capture the rough texture of clothing and the specific posture of a person in motion. His prints, including Man krabt aan zijn schouder and Gezicht op Gouda, demonstrate a disciplined hand and a preference for realistic, unvarnished human activity.

Modern collectors find appeal in the honesty of his output. His prints offer a window into the daily life of the Dutch Republic without the gloss of formal portraiture. By choosing subjects that exist outside of traditional hierarchies, Van Waes provides a distinct perspective that fits well in contemporary interior spaces.
