A Dutch moralising etching from the late eighteenth century, depicting cautionary scenes of children and overturned carts to teach lessons on vigilance and gratitude.
This etching, produced in Amsterdam by the publisher Schalekamp en van de Grampel, belongs to a tradition of moralising prints intended for the instruction of children. The work features two distinct scenes depicting the consequences of negligence and lack of supervision. In the upper panel, a cart has overturned, spilling its young occupants onto the ground, while an adult figure looks on with a gesture of alarm. The lower panel shows a similar scene of disarray, accompanied by a dog and a seated figure pointing towards the mishap.
The text accompanying the images serves as a didactic tool, warning the youth to be grateful for the care they receive and cautioning against the dangers of being left to their own devices. The Dutch verses underscore the necessity of parental vigilance, suggesting that misfortune is the inevitable result of carelessness. The print is characteristic of late eighteenth-century Dutch popular culture, where visual media were frequently employed to disseminate social values and domestic ethics.
Technically, the work exhibits the crisp, linear quality typical of period etchings. The figures are rendered with expressive, albeit simplified, features, and the composition is divided into clear, narrative registers. The inclusion of the publisher's address on the Nieuwe Zijds Voorburgwal in Amsterdam places this print within the active commercial print market of the era. It provides a window into the pedagogical methods of the time, where cautionary tales were presented through accessible, mass-produced imagery. The paper shows the natural ageing expected of a document from this period, retaining the character of its original production as a broadside or instructional sheet.
