A Dutch etching from the late eighteenth century depicting winter scenes of leisure and labour, featuring horse-drawn sleighs and peat transport.
This Dutch etching, produced by Jacobus Wendel and published by the firm of Erven H. Rynders in Amsterdam, captures the social character of winter life in the Netherlands during the late eighteenth century. The print is divided into two distinct registers, each depicting a different aspect of seasonal activity. The upper panel shows a horse-drawn sleigh, a common mode of transport for the affluent during frozen winters, while the lower panel illustrates a more utilitarian scene involving the transport of peat, a necessary fuel source for domestic heating.
The work belongs to a tradition of popular prints that combined visual narrative with didactic or descriptive verse. The text accompanying the images provides a commentary on the contrast between leisure and labour. The upper verses describe the joy of sleigh rides across the ice, while the lower verses focus on the practical concerns of the common man, specifically the collection of peat to ward off the winter chill. The hand-applied colour, though sparse, draws the eye to the figures and the horse, providing a sense of immediacy to the scenes.
Technically, the print exhibits the characteristics of mass-produced broadsides of the period. The lines are direct and functional, intended for clarity rather than fine artistic detail. The composition is straightforward, prioritising the legibility of the narrative over spatial depth. As a historical document, the print offers a glimpse into the daily life and social stratification of the Dutch Republic. It records the specific equipment used for winter transport and the reliance on peat as a primary energy source. The inclusion of the publisher's address in Amsterdam confirms its origin as a commercial product intended for a local audience, likely sold as a cheap, accessible item for the home or public house.
