A pair of hanging scrolls by Kanō Isen'in Naganobu depicting the Yueyang Pavilion, rendered in ink and colour on silk with gold-leaf accents.
Kanō Isen'in Naganobu, a head of the Kobikichō branch of the Kanō school, produced this work during the late Edo period. The composition follows the traditional format of a pair of hanging scrolls, depicting the famous Yueyang Pavilion, a site of historical and literary significance in China. The artist employs the classic Kanō technique of combining detailed architectural rendering with atmospheric, gold-leafed backgrounds that suggest mist and distance.
The left scroll focuses on the natural environment, featuring rolling hills, small boats navigating the water, and figures gathered near a dwelling. The right scroll centres on the pavilion itself, constructed with precise lines and clear structural detail. The contrast between the solid, man-made architecture and the fluid, ethereal treatment of the water and sky is a hallmark of the school's approach to classical subject matter. The use of gold wash creates a sense of light that permeates the scene, softening the transition between the foreground elements and the distant mountains.
Naganobu was a prolific painter who served the Tokugawa shogunate. His work reflects the technical rigour expected of the Kanō lineage, which maintained its position as the official school of the shogunate for centuries. The figures are rendered with fine brushwork, showing individuals engaged in daily activities, which adds a human element to the grand architectural setting. This piece demonstrates the school's ability to adapt Chinese-inspired themes into the refined aesthetic preferences of the Japanese elite during the early nineteenth century. The balanced composition and the careful application of colour on silk provide a view into the stylistic conventions of the period, where traditional motifs were executed with technical precision and a focus on decorative harmony.
