Matsumura Goshun, also known as Gekkei, was a central figure in the development of the Shijo school of painting in Kyoto. This work depicts a solitary figure on horseback navigating a rugged mountain path, a subject that reflects the artist's interest in the quietude of rural life and the natural world. The composition utilises a vertical format, common in traditional hanging scrolls, to suggest the steep incline of the terrain.

Goshun began his training under Yosa Buson, a master of the Nanga or literati style, before later incorporating the more naturalistic and fluid techniques associated with the Maruyama school. This synthesis is evident in the brushwork here. The rocks and foliage are rendered with a combination of controlled ink washes and lighter, more spontaneous strokes. The figure of the herb gatherer is captured with a sense of gentle movement, his posture suggesting the weariness of a long journey through the hills.

The palette remains restrained, relying on earthy tones of brown, ochre, and muted green to evoke the atmosphere of a mountain pass. The artist employs negative space to suggest mist or distance, a technique that draws the viewer into the scene without overwhelming the eye with unnecessary detail. The texture of the horse and the rough garments of the rider are suggested through economical use of line, demonstrating the artist's ability to convey form with minimal effort.
