Painted by the Swiss artist Benjamin Samuel Bolomey, the work captures the Prince in his youth, dressed in formal military attire. The subject wears a polished steel cuirass, which reflects the light with precision, contrasting against the soft, powdered wig and the formal lace cravat at his throat. A vibrant orange sash, the traditional colour of the House of Orange, is draped across his waist, providing a warm counterpoint to the cool metallic tones of his armour.
Bolomey, who spent a significant portion of his career in The Hague, was a sought-after painter for the Dutch elite. His approach to portraiture in this piece follows the conventions of eighteenth-century European court painting. The Prince holds a baton, a symbol of his military authority and rank.
