A refined 1757 portrait by François Hubert Drouais depicting a woman at a harpsichord, captured in elegant blue silk.
François Hubert Drouais, a prominent portraitist in the French court, completed this work in 1757. The subject is traditionally identified as Marie Justine Benoîte Duronceray, known as Madame Favart, a celebrated actress and singer of the period. She is depicted seated at a harpsichord, her hands poised over the keys, suggesting a moment of musical performance.
The composition focuses on the subject's engagement with her instrument. She wears a gown of blue silk, rendered with careful attention to the play of light across the fabric folds. The lace at her sleeves and the ribbon at her neck provide textural contrast to the smooth sheen of the dress. Beside her, an open music book rests on the harpsichord, adding a narrative element to the portrait. The background remains dark and neutral, which directs attention to the figure and the illuminated pages of the score.
Drouais was known for his ability to capture the likeness and social standing of his sitters. This painting reflects the aesthetic preferences of the mid-eighteenth century, where portraiture often incorporated objects that alluded to the sitter's personal interests or professional life. The brushwork is precise, particularly in the treatment of the lace and the facial features, which exhibit a soft, naturalistic quality. The palette is dominated by the cool blue of the dress, balanced by the warm, muted tones of the instrument and the background. This work is held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where it is recognised for its technical execution and its connection to the theatrical circles of eighteenth-century Paris.
