Beskrivning
A serene, late-career work by Henri Rousseau, depicting the quiet paths and distinctive foliage of the Parc des Buttes Chaumont in Paris.
Henri Rousseau, a self-taught painter often associated with the Naïve movement, produced this view of the Parc des Buttes Chaumont towards the end of his career. The work displays his characteristic approach to form, where individual elements are rendered with a clarity that borders on the schematic. The tall, slender cypresses dominate the composition, their verticality contrasted against the rounded, bushy forms of the smaller trees in the foreground.
Rousseau applies paint in a methodical manner, building up the foliage through small, repetitive brushstrokes that define the texture of the leaves. The colour palette relies on earthy greens, ochres, and muted yellows, suggesting an autumnal atmosphere. A small path winds into the lower left corner, where three figures are depicted in simple, block-like forms. Their presence provides a sense of scale, though they remain secondary to the botanical subjects that occupy the majority of the frame.
Unlike his contemporaries who sought to capture the fleeting effects of light, Rousseau focused on the static, almost dreamlike quality of his subjects. The space is constructed in a flattened manner, with the trees arranged as if on a stage set. This lack of traditional atmospheric perspective contributes to the singular, quiet mood of the scene. The artist signed the work in the lower right corner, a common practice in his later years as he gained recognition among the Parisian avant-garde. This print captures the precise, deliberate nature of his brushwork and the unique vision that defined his contribution to early twentieth-century painting.

Walking in the Parc des Buttes Chaumont - Henri Rousseau
Artist Biography
Henri Rousseau
Nicknamed Le Douanier (“the Customs Officer”) due to his job on the outskirts of Paris, Rousseau only began painting seriously at age 40 and retired nine years later to pursue art full time. Though he never left France, his exotic landscapes—lush with oversized foliage and wild animals—were inspired by visits to botanical gardens, illustrated books, and stories from soldiers who had served abroad.
Rousseau believed himself to be a great realist, proudly comparing himself to Picasso. He also pioneered the "portrait landscape" genre, blending figures into rich natural backdrops. Once mocked, Rousseau is now celebrated as a visionary outsider whose work continues to inspire, including references in modern pop culture such as the film Madagascar.
