A woodblock print by Shōtei Hokuju depicting the Ryogoku Bridge, showcasing early 19th-century Japanese experimentation with Western-style perspective.
Shōtei Hokuju was a pupil of Katsushika Hokusai, and this woodblock print demonstrates his interest in Western-style linear perspective. During the late Edo period, Japanese artists began to experiment with depth and vanishing points, often influenced by imported Dutch copperplate engravings. This print depicts the iconic Ryogoku Bridge, a major crossing over the Sumida River in Edo, now Tokyo.
The composition is structured around the horizontal span of the bridge, which draws the eye across the river. Hokuju employs a muted palette of indigo, ochre, and soft greens, typical of the period's printing techniques. The figures crossing the bridge are rendered with minimal detail, serving to provide a sense of scale against the architecture. The riverbank features small boats and storage structures, suggesting the commercial activity of the area. The sky is treated with a simple gradient, a common feature in ukiyo-e prints of the time to suggest atmospheric depth.
Hokuju is recognised for his specific approach to perspective, which often appears slightly rigid compared to the more fluid compositions of his contemporaries. This work captures a moment of daily life in the capital, focusing on the intersection of urban infrastructure and the natural flow of the river. The print reflects the broader interest in topographical subjects that became popular among the urban population of Edo. By choosing a well-known site, the artist connects the viewer to the physical reality of the city. The print remains a record of the architectural history of the Sumida River area before the modernisation of the Meiji era.
