Beskrivning
A nocturnal woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, depicting the quiet atmosphere of Kyōbashi Bridge under a full moon from the One Hundred Famous Views of Edo.
Bamboo Quay by Kyōbashi Bridge is the 76th print from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige between 1856 and 1858. This specific work captures a nocturnal scene in the capital, featuring the iconic Kyōbashi Bridge under the glow of a full moon. The composition utilises a strong vertical orientation, drawing the eye from the foreground boatman to the elevated bridge where figures traverse the span.
Hiroshige employs a sophisticated colour palette, relying on deep indigo and charcoal tones to establish the atmosphere of night. The contrast between the dark, silhouetted structures of the bridge and the pale, luminous moon creates a sense of stillness. The vertical lines of the bamboo stacks, which give the quay its name, provide a rhythmic structure to the left side of the frame. These stacks, rendered with precise, clean lines, balance the organic, flowing movement of the water below.
As a master of the Ukiyo-e tradition, Hiroshige demonstrates his ability to manipulate perspective and light to convey mood rather than mere topographical accuracy. The print reflects the urban life of Edo, showing the bridge as a site of transit and commerce. The inclusion of the cartouche in the upper right corner, containing the series title and the specific location, is a standard feature of the series, providing context for the viewer. This work remains a primary example of the technical skill involved in mid-nineteenth-century Japanese woodblock printing, particularly in the application of bokashi, or colour gradation, which is visible in the sky and the water. The print offers a quiet observation of city life, removed from the bustle of the day, captured through the lens of a seasoned observer of Edo's changing environment.
