A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Shōtei Hokuju, capturing the iconic Wedded Rocks at Futami Beach with precise lines and a muted, atmospheric palette.
This woodblock print by Shōtei Hokuju depicts the famous Meoto Iwa, or Wedded Rocks, at Futami Beach in Ise. Hokuju was a student of Katsushika Hokusai, and his work often reflects the experimentation with Western-style perspective that characterised the early nineteenth-century Ukiyo-e school. The composition balances the natural formation of the rocks, connected by a sacred shimenawa rope, against the human presence on the shore.
The foreground features a wave rendered with stylised, rhythmic lines, a technique that draws attention to the movement of the tide. On the beach, two figures are positioned to provide a sense of scale, their presence suggesting the site's popularity as a destination for travellers and pilgrims. The cliffs on the right frame the scene, creating a sense of depth that leads the eye toward the distant horizon and the smaller vessels scattered across the bay.
Hokuju uses a restrained palette, relying on soft blues, earthy browns, and muted greens. This choice of colour allows the viewer to focus on the structural elements of the print, such as the interplay between the verticality of the rocks and the horizontal expanse of the sea. The clouds, rendered in a distinct, somewhat geometric fashion, are a signature element of Hokuju's style, often appearing in his depictions of famous sites. This print serves as an example of the transition in Japanese printmaking during the Edo period, where traditional subjects were increasingly interpreted through new compositional methods. The work captures a specific moment at a site of religious and cultural significance, presenting it with a clarity that remains effective for contemporary display.
