A study of red carnations and white flowers in a dark vase, painted by Vincent van Gogh during his period in Paris.
Painted during his time in Paris, this still life demonstrates the shift in Vincent van Gogh's palette as he engaged with the work of contemporary French painters. The composition features a dark, rounded vase containing a dense arrangement of white flowers and bright red carnations. Van Gogh applies paint with visible, directional brushwork, a technique that provides the surface with a sense of movement and physical presence.
The background consists of a mottled blue and green surface, which contrasts with the warm tones of the flowers. This choice of colour creates a tension between the foreground objects and the space behind them. The artist places a few loose petals on the table surface, a detail that adds a sense of natural decay and temporal progression to the arrangement. Unlike his later, more experimental works, this piece retains a degree of traditional structure while showing the early development of his signature application of pigment.
Van Gogh produced several floral studies during his stay in Paris, often using them to experiment with colour theory and the juxtaposition of complementary hues. The red of the carnations against the blue-green background is a clear application of these principles. The work remains a study of light and form, captured through the lens of an artist transitioning from the darker tones of his Dutch period toward the brighter, more expressive style he would adopt in the south of France. The focus remains on the tactile quality of the paint and the immediate visual impact of the floral subject matter.
