A masterful seventeenth-century floral still life by Clara Peeters, featuring a diverse bouquet in a glass vase against a dark, atmospheric background.
Clara Peeters was a pioneer of the still life genre in the early seventeenth century. This composition displays her technical precision and her ability to render diverse botanical textures. The arrangement features a variety of blossoms, including roses, tulips, daffodils, and columbines, gathered in a glass vase. The dark, neutral background ensures that the colours of the petals remain the primary focus, allowing the viewer to observe the subtle variations in light and shadow across the leaves and blooms.
Peeters often included small, precise details to add narrative depth to her work. Here, a butterfly rests near a fallen white flower on the stone ledge, providing a sense of scale and a reminder of the fleeting nature of the natural world. The glass vase itself is rendered with careful attention to transparency and reflection, demonstrating the artist's command over light. Her work is characterised by a balanced composition that avoids clutter while maintaining a sense of abundance.
As one of the few women artists of the period to specialise in still life, Peeters occupied a unique position in the art market of Antwerp and Amsterdam. Her paintings were highly sought after by collectors who appreciated her meticulous brushwork and her ability to capture the ephemeral beauty of flora. This print captures the depth of the original oil painting, preserving the contrast between the illuminated flowers and the shadowed backdrop. It is a fine example of the early development of the floral still life, a genre that would continue to develop throughout the century. The clarity of the image allows for an examination of the individual brushstrokes used to define the delicate edges of the petals and the sturdy stems of the plants.
