Painted in Arles in 1888, this work depicts a simple, rustic wooden chair set against a tiled floor and a blue wall. The object occupies the centre of the composition, rendered with thick, expressive brushwork that defines the texture of the straw seat and the worn wood of the frame. A pipe and a pouch of tobacco rest upon the seat, acting as personal markers of the artist. To the left, a small crate contains onions, with the name 'Vincent' inscribed on the side.
Van Gogh created this painting during his time at the Yellow House, a period marked by his desire to establish an artists' colony. The chair is often interpreted as a self-portrait, representing his own presence and identity through the objects he used daily. The colour palette relies on the contrast between the yellow of the chair and the cool blue of the background, a technique he frequently employed to create visual tension. The perspective is slightly elevated, allowing the viewer to look down onto the seat, which emphasises the humble, everyday nature of the subject.
This painting is a companion piece to 'Gauguin's Chair', which Van Gogh painted around the same time. While the chair belonging to Paul Gauguin is depicted as more ornate and set in a night-time environment, this version is grounded in daylight and simplicity. The work demonstrates his focus on capturing the character of inanimate objects, imbuing them with a sense of personal history and emotional weight. The application of paint is direct and unrefined, reflecting his approach to capturing the essence of his surroundings without unnecessary embellishment. Artist Biography
Vincent Van Gogh
He taught himself to draw by copying prints and working through textbooks. His brother Theo, an art dealer in Paris, sent money every month for the rest of Vincent's life. Without Theo there are no paintings. The letters between them, over 600, are one of the most complete records of any artist's thinking. Van Gogh wrote about colour theory, composition, what he ate, what he read, how much he spent on paint. He was articulate and well-read and not, despite the popular version, simply mad.
He moved to Paris in 1886 and encountered Impressionism. The palette changed immediately: from the dark browns of his Dutch period to the colours people actually associate with his work. He met Gauguin, Pissarro, Signac, Toulouse-Lautrec. He absorbed Pointillism and Japanese prints. Then he moved to Arles in the south of France, where the light was better and people were fewer.
The Arles period produced Sunflowers, The Bedroom, Starry Night Over the Rhone. The breakdown followed: the argument with Gauguin, the severed ear (he cut part of his left ear, not the whole thing), the asylum at Saint-Remy, and then Auvers-sur-Oise, where he painted seventy canvases in seventy days before dying from a gunshot wound at thirty-seven. He sold one painting during his lifetime, or possibly two. Theo died six months later.
