A painterly still life by Russian Symbolist Victor Borisov-Musatov, featuring a bouquet, a mirror, and a lemon rendered in soft, expressive brushwork.
Victor Borisov-Musatov is recognised for his contribution to Russian Symbolism, a movement that prioritised mood and subjective experience over objective representation. This still life demonstrates his characteristic approach to colour and light, where the physical boundaries of objects soften into a unified atmospheric field. The composition features a glass vase containing a bouquet of flowers, positioned alongside a mirror, a lemon, and an open book. The inclusion of the mirror is a recurring device in his work, used here to reflect the surrounding space and complicate the viewer's perception of the tabletop arrangement.
The brushwork is loose and expressive, favouring the application of paint in visible, rhythmic strokes. Rather than focusing on the precise botanical details of the flowers, Borisov-Musatov captures their essence through a palette of cool blues, whites, and touches of warm red. The dark, indeterminate background serves to push the objects forward, creating a sense of quiet isolation. The light source appears diffuse, casting soft shadows that contribute to the dreamlike quality of the scene.
Borisov-Musatov studied in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and Paris, where he encountered the work of French Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. These influences are visible in his handling of light and his interest in the decorative potential of the canvas surface. Despite the brevity of his career, his work remains a distinct example of the transition toward modernism in Russian art. This print captures the textural quality of the original oil paint, preserving the artist's deliberate, painterly marks. It offers an opportunity to observe the way he balanced representational elements with a more abstract, emotional resonance, typical of his turn-of-the-century output.
