Beskrivning
A dynamic abstract composition by Sol LeWitt, featuring fluid, undulating lines in a bold palette against a bright blue ground.
This work represents a departure from the rigid geometric structures often associated with Sol LeWitt. While he is known for his systematic approach to art, his later gouache works introduced a more gestural, fluid quality. The composition consists of overlapping, undulating lines that traverse the surface in a rhythmic, non-linear fashion. These forms create a sense of motion against a bright blue background.
LeWitt utilised a limited palette of primary and secondary colours, including red, yellow, black, white, and grey. The application of paint is direct, showing the physical movement of the artist's hand. By focusing on the repetition of these serpentine shapes, the work explores the relationship between order and chaos. The lines do not follow a strict grid, yet they maintain a consistent density across the paper. This approach allows the viewer to observe the interaction of colour and form without the distraction of representational imagery.
As a practitioner of Conceptual Art, LeWitt often prioritised the idea behind the work over the final execution. However, these later gouache pieces demonstrate a shift toward a more tactile engagement with materials. The work functions as an investigation into the possibilities of the line as a primary element of visual language. It avoids traditional perspective, opting instead for a flat, decorative surface that engages the eye through its constant movement. The result is a balanced arrangement that feels both spontaneous and controlled, reflecting the artist's interest in the fundamental components of visual expression.

Artist Biography
Sol Lewitt
He was born in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1928, to Russian Jewish immigrant parents. His father died when he was six. He drew on wrapping paper from his aunt's shop and took art classes at the Wadsworth Atheneum. He served in the Korean War, then settled in New York.
From 1968, he created over a thousand numbered wall drawings. He conceived them as musical scores that anyone could execute: a set of written instructions, carried out by other people, with the physical drawing destroyed after each exhibition. The idea, he argued, was the machine that makes the art. The execution was secondary. He championed and financially supported women artists who were being sidelined by the male-dominated art world. He refused to participate in celebrity culture and remained deliberately private. He died in 2007.
