Untitled (Green on Blue) - Mark Rothko

A classic example of Mark Rothko's Color Field painting, featuring soft-edged rectangular forms in varying shades of blue and green.

Mark Rothko, born Marcus Rothkowitz in Latvia, moved to the United States in 1913. He became a central figure in the New York School of painters during the mid-twentieth century. This work, dating from 1956, displays the characteristic format of his mature period. Rothko abandoned figurative subjects in the late 1940s to focus on the expressive potential of colour and form.

The composition consists of two primary rectangular blocks of colour stacked vertically against a lighter, atmospheric ground. The upper section is a deep, saturated teal-green, while the lower section is a lighter, cooler blue. A thin, horizontal band of intense cobalt blue separates these two masses. The edges of these shapes are not hard or defined. Instead, they appear to blur into the surrounding space, creating a sense of soft, luminous transition. This technique allows the colours to seem as though they are hovering or vibrating on the surface of the canvas.

Rothko intended for his paintings to elicit a direct emotional response from the viewer. He often requested that his works be hung low and in groups, encouraging an immersive experience. By removing representational imagery, he sought to communicate basic human emotions, such as tragedy, ecstasy, and doom. The scale of the original canvas is large, which forces the viewer to engage with the work on a physical level, filling their field of vision with the shifting tones of blue and green. The paint application is thin, allowing the texture of the canvas to remain visible beneath the layers of pigment. This approach contributes to the ethereal quality of the work, as the light appears to emanate from within the layers rather than reflecting off the surface.
