This fine art print captures a piece of historical ceramic craftsmanship, specifically an earthenware jar dating to the 12th or 13th century. The vessel exhibits the characteristic aesthetic of medieval Islamic pottery, where functional forms were often elevated through the application of alkaline glazes. The body of the jar features a globular shape, tapering towards a narrow base, which is typical of storage vessels from this period and region.
The surface treatment is defined by a partial turquoise glaze that has weathered over centuries, resulting in a craquelure effect across the body. This degradation of the glaze reveals the underlying clay body, providing a contrast between the muted, earthy tones of the ceramic and the remnants of the once-brilliant blue-green finish. Around the shoulder of the vessel, there is a band of relief decoration. This ornamentation consists of repeating geometric or calligraphic motifs, which were pressed into the clay before firing.
