A fine art print of a Japanese calligraphy scroll by Shokusanjin, featuring two playful kyōka verses rendered in fluid, expressive ink strokes.
This piece displays the calligraphic hand of Ōta Nanpo, a prominent figure in the literary circles of Edo-period Japan. Known by his pen name Shokusanjin, he was a master of kyōka, a form of satirical or playful waka poetry that utilised the traditional thirty-one-syllable structure to comment on contemporary life, social customs, and human foibles. The work presents two distinct verses rendered in a fluid, cursive script that prioritises the rhythm of the brush over strict legibility.
The composition is mounted as a horizontal scroll, a format that dictates the viewer's engagement with the text. As the eye moves from right to left, the varying density of the ink and the deliberate spacing between characters create a visual cadence. The calligraphic style reflects the artist's background as a scholar and wit, demonstrating a command of the brush that balances spontaneity with technical precision. The paper itself is framed by decorative borders featuring subtle floral motifs, which provide a muted backdrop for the bold, dark ink strokes.
Shokusanjin was central to the development of the kyōka movement, which flourished among the urban merchant class and intellectuals of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. His writing often subverted the gravity of classical poetry, replacing it with irony and sharp observation. This print captures the essence of that tradition, offering a glimpse into the intellectual culture of the period. The work is not merely a transcription of text, but an expression of the artist's personality and his approach to the literary arts. It serves as an example of the intersection between high-level calligraphy and the popular, often irreverent, literary output of the time.
