A panoramic woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, capturing five stations along the historic Tokaido road with detailed topographical labels.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicts a panoramic view of the Tokaido road, specifically encompassing the stations of Nissaka, Kakegawa, Fukuroi, Mitsuke, and Hamamatsu. Kuniyoshi, a master of the Utagawa school, departs from the typical single-station focus of earlier series by Hiroshige. Instead, he presents a wide-angle perspective that compresses multiple geographical points into a single composition. The print functions as a cartographic guide as much as a visual record, with various mountains and towns labelled directly on the image.
The composition is anchored by a prominent central peak, which draws the eye through the layered terrain. To the right, a solitary pine tree leans over a winding path, providing a sense of scale and depth. The colour palette relies on subtle gradients, particularly in the sky, which transitions from a deep blue at the top to a pale horizon. The mountains are rendered with distinct textures, using varied green and ochre tones to differentiate the slopes. Small cartouches containing text provide specific information about the locations, a common feature in mid-nineteenth-century Japanese travel prints.
Kuniyoshi demonstrates his technical skill through the precise registration of the woodblocks, ensuring that the fine lines of the topography remain clear. The print captures the essence of travel during the Edo period, where the journey between Kyoto and Edo was a cultural phenomenon. By grouping these five stations, the artist offers a comprehensive view of the region, allowing the viewer to survey the terrain from a high vantage point. This work is an example of the later period of Ukiyo-e, where artists experimented with wider perspectives and more complex narrative structures within the constraints of the woodblock medium.
