Beskrivning
A striking depiction of a tiger by the Edo period master Ito Jakuchu, featuring rhythmic brushwork and a balanced, minimalist composition.
Ito Jakuchu, a merchant-turned-painter from Kyoto, produced this depiction of a tiger during the mid-Edo period. The work demonstrates his characteristic approach to animal subjects, which often combined meticulous observation with a degree of stylisation. The tiger is rendered with a focus on its physical form, featuring bold, rhythmic stripes that define the musculature and posture of the creature. The animal is positioned in a crouched, alert state, set against a simplified background that includes the suggestion of a gnarled tree branch above.
Jakuchu was known for his eccentric style and his ability to capture the essence of his subjects through precise brushwork. Unlike many of his contemporaries who followed strict academic conventions, Jakuchu often experimented with composition and colour. The palette here remains relatively restrained, relying on warm, earthy tones that complement the natural colour of the silk support. The calligraphic quality of the lines, particularly in the tiger's fur and the surrounding foliage, reflects the artist's training in traditional ink painting techniques. This piece is part of a broader body of work in which Jakuchu explored the natural world, often imbuing his subjects with a distinct personality. The composition is balanced, with the tiger occupying the lower portion of the frame, allowing the negative space to provide a sense of atmosphere. The inclusion of the artist's seal and signature provides authenticity to the work, which remains a notable example of his contribution to Japanese art history.
