A refined woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu, depicting a young horseman and his companion under an umbrella, rendered in the delicate nishiki-e style.
Suzuki Harunobu is credited with the development of nishiki-e, or brocade prints, which allowed for the use of multiple colours in a single woodblock composition. This print depicts a young man mounted on a white horse, accompanied by a woman who holds a large umbrella over him. The figures are rendered with the slender, ethereal proportions characteristic of Harunobu's mature style. Their expressions are calm, and their postures suggest a quiet, controlled movement across the pictorial space.
The composition relies on a balanced arrangement of forms against a neutral background. The artist uses a refined palette of soft greens, muted pinks, and warm ochre tones. The lines are precise and delicate, defining the folds of the kimono and the gentle features of the subjects. The umbrella provides a strong geometric element that frames the upper portion of the scene, while the horse is depicted with simplified, elegant contours.
Harunobu's work often focused on the daily lives of urban dwellers in Edo, frequently drawing inspiration from classical literature and contemporary theatre. This print captures a moment of refined leisure, typical of the subjects favoured by the artist during the mid-18th century. The technical mastery of the woodblock printing process is evident in the registration of the colours and the subtle gradations achieved within the printed areas. As a representative example of the nishiki-e style, this work demonstrates the shift towards greater chromatic complexity in Japanese printmaking during the period. The print remains a clear example of the aesthetic values prevalent in the ukiyo-e tradition, prioritising grace and stylistic harmony over realistic depiction.
