A lively, detailed depiction of the Eight Immortals of the Wine Cup by the Edo period master Nagasawa Rosetsu.
Nagasawa Rosetsu, a student of Maruyama Okyo, is recognised for his unconventional approach to traditional subjects. This work depicts the legendary Eight Immortals of the Wine Cup, a group of Tang dynasty poets known for their affinity for alcohol and literary pursuits. Unlike more formal depictions of these figures, Rosetsu presents a chaotic, lively scene that captures the spirit of a social gathering.
The composition is dense, filled with figures engaged in various states of revelry. Rosetsu employs a fluid, calligraphic line to define the robes and expressions of the participants, balancing the crowded foreground with a more open, atmospheric background. The use of light colour washes adds a subtle dimension to the ink work, drawing attention to the interaction between the figures and the scattered objects of the feast, such as wine jars and serving vessels.
Rosetsu often experimented with scale and perspective, and here he manages to organise a large number of individuals without losing the narrative clarity of the scene. The work reflects the artist's ability to blend classical themes with a sense of humour and human observation. The figures are rendered with individualised features, moving away from the idealised portrayals common in earlier periods. This print captures the energy of the festival, offering a glimpse into the creative freedom that defined Rosetsu's later career. The work remains a fine example of the Maruyama-Shijo school's focus on naturalism and expressive brushwork, adapted to suit the artist's unique, often eccentric, artistic vision.
