Xia Yong, a painter active during the Yuan Dynasty, is recognised for his mastery of jiehua, or ruled-line painting. This technique requires the use of a ruler to achieve precise architectural renderings. In this work, the artist depicts a multi-storey pavilion with remarkable technical control. The structure occupies the right side of the composition, balanced by the vast, empty space of the silk ground on the left. This use of negative space is a hallmark of the period, allowing the viewer to focus on the architectural details and the small, singular figure of a crane in flight.

The pavilion itself is rendered with fine, disciplined lines. Every beam, bracket, and roof tile is delineated with clarity. The surrounding trees and distant, softly washed mountains provide a natural contrast to the rigid geometry of the building. The inclusion of a calligraphic inscription and red seals adds a layer of historical context, typical of traditional Chinese scroll painting.
