A fine example of Yuan Dynasty ruled-line painting, this work depicts a traditional dragon boat regatta with precise architectural detail.
Wang Zhenpeng was a master of the jiehua, or ruled-line, style of painting during the Yuan Dynasty. This technique relies on the use of a ruler to create precise, architectural lines, allowing for the meticulous depiction of buildings, bridges, and boats. His work is characterised by a high degree of control and technical rigour, which is evident in the rendering of the structures and vessels seen here.
This handscroll depicts a scene on Jinming Lake, a site historically associated with imperial festivities and water-based pageantry. The composition focuses on the interaction between the elaborate, multi-storied dragon boats and the surrounding architecture. The artist employs a fine, steady hand to delineate the roof tiles, railings, and structural supports of the pavilions, ensuring that the perspective remains consistent across the scroll. The figures on the boats are rendered with equal attention to detail, capturing the activity of the regatta.
The use of ink on silk provides a subtle, monochromatic palette that emphasises the structural clarity of the scene. By avoiding colour, the artist draws attention to the precision of the brushwork and the complexity of the architectural forms. This approach reflects the aesthetic values of the period, where technical mastery and the ability to represent complex spatial arrangements were highly regarded. The work serves as a record of the elaborate court life and the engineering of the era, presented through a disciplined and refined artistic lens. The presence of the artist's seal confirms the attribution to Wang Zhenpeng, whose reputation as the foremost practitioner of the ruled-line style remains established in the history of Chinese art.
