The Waterfall, completed in 1910, represents the final phase of Henri Rousseau's career. As a self-taught painter, Rousseau developed a distinct visual language that diverged from the academic standards of his time. He is known for his imaginative depictions of tropical environments, which he constructed from observations of botanical gardens and illustrated books rather than direct experience of the tropics.
In this composition, the viewer encounters a dense, layered forest environment. Rousseau employs a flattened perspective, where individual leaves and plants are rendered with meticulous, almost taxonomic precision. The foliage creates a screen-like effect, obscuring the background and pushing the subjects to the foreground. A solitary figure sits near a small waterfall, accompanied by two deer. Artist Biography
Henri Rousseau
Nicknamed Le Douanier (“the Customs Officer”) due to his job on the outskirts of Paris, Rousseau only began painting seriously at age 40 and retired nine years later to pursue art full time. Though he never left France, his exotic landscapes—lush with oversized foliage and wild animals—were inspired by visits to botanical gardens, illustrated books, and stories from soldiers who had served abroad.
Rousseau believed himself to be a great realist, proudly comparing himself to Picasso. He also pioneered the "portrait landscape" genre, blending figures into rich natural backdrops. Once mocked, Rousseau is now celebrated as a visionary outsider whose work continues to inspire, including references in modern pop culture such as the film Madagascar.
