A detailed woodblock print depicting the Western-style Tsukiji Hotel and a steamship in Meiji-era Tokyo, capturing the city's rapid modernisation.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige III captures a specific moment of architectural and technological transition in Meiji-period Japan. The Tsukiji Hotel, a structure built in a Western style with a prominent cupola and balconies, dominates the background. This building was an early example of the foreign-influenced architecture that appeared in Tokyo following the opening of the city to international trade. The hotel is positioned against the backdrop of Mount Fuji, creating a visual juxtaposition between traditional Japanese geography and the new, imported aesthetic of the Meiji era.
In the foreground, a paddle-wheel steamship named the City of Yedo traverses the water. The inclusion of this vessel, complete with a smoking funnel and a flag, documents the arrival of industrial transport in the capital. The print is a triptych, a format often used by Hiroshige III to convey expansive scenes of urban development. The artist employs a clear, graphic approach to line work, typical of the late Ukiyo-e tradition, where the focus is on documenting the rapid modernisation of the city. The colour palette is balanced, using muted tones for the stone embankments and the distant mountain, while allowing the architectural details of the hotel and the steamship to remain legible. This work functions as a historical record of the Tsukiji district, which served as the designated foreign settlement in Tokyo during the late nineteenth century. The composition relies on a horizontal orientation, guiding the eye from the steamship across the water to the hotel and the distant horizon. It is a precise observation of the changing urban environment, capturing the intersection of local life and global influence during a period of significant national adjustment.
