A woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshimori showing two figures observing Mount Fuji through a telescope, blending traditional Japanese style with modern curiosity.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshimori depicts a scene from the series Famous Mountains in Japan. The composition features the iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji in the background, rendered with clean, minimalist lines. In the foreground, two figures are positioned on a rocky outcrop. One figure, dressed in a yellow robe, kneels while peering through a telescope directed towards the mountain. The second figure, wearing a dark coat, stands upright and gazes upwards with an expression of surprise or awe.
Yoshimori, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, was active during the late Edo and early Meiji periods. His work often reflects the changing social climate of Japan as it began to engage more frequently with foreign influences. The inclusion of the telescope, a Western instrument, suggests a curiosity regarding modern technology and observation methods. The print utilises a controlled colour palette, balancing the muted tones of the rocky ground and the figures' clothing against the soft blue of the sky and the stark white of the mountain peak.
The print demonstrates the characteristic flat perspective common in Ukiyo-e, where depth is suggested through the layering of elements rather than linear perspective. The figures are drawn with clear outlines, typical of the Utagawa school, and the overall arrangement maintains a sense of balance despite the contrasting postures of the two men. This piece offers a view into the mid-nineteenth-century Japanese fascination with both traditional natural landmarks and the introduction of foreign tools. It remains a clear example of the thematic shifts occurring in printmaking during this period, moving away from purely traditional subjects to include elements of contemporary life and curiosity.
