Known as 'Grecian Williams' for his extensive travels and focus on classical subjects, the artist captures the structure with a precise, observational approach. The drawing focuses on the Corinthian columns and the entablature, which remain well-preserved due to the building's conversion into the church of San Lorenzo in Miranda during the medieval period.

The composition balances architectural rigour with the atmospheric qualities of the Roman site. Williams employs a light wash to suggest the texture of the weathered stone and the surrounding foliage. The inclusion of small figures in the distance provides a sense of scale, grounding the monumental ruins within the contemporary setting of the early nineteenth century. The artist's technique relies on delicate graphite outlines, supplemented by subtle tonal variations in sepia and grey washes to define the depth of the portico.

During his Grand Tour, Williams produced numerous studies of classical sites, documenting the state of these ruins before modern archaeological excavations altered their appearance. This piece reflects the period's fascination with antiquity, where artists sought to record the physical reality of historical sites. The work avoids excessive embellishment, favouring a clear, measured representation of the architecture.
