A satirical lithograph by Henry Bonaventure Monnier depicting a dishevelled man in a doorway, capturing the social humour of 1830s Paris.
This lithograph by Henry Bonaventure Monnier, published in the journal La Caricature, captures a moment of domestic satire typical of the July Monarchy period in France. Monnier, a keen observer of Parisian social types, depicts a man standing in a doorway, clutching a striped bag, with a caption that translates to: 'My wife is not waiting for me, she is happy!!'. The work reflects the artist's interest in the mundane and often absurd realities of bourgeois life.
The composition is stark and focused. The figure is positioned centrally against a flat, pale green door, which serves as a theatrical backdrop for his dishevelled appearance. Monnier employs a calligraphic line quality to define the folds of the man's heavy overcoat and the contours of his face, which is rendered with the exaggerated features characteristic of nineteenth-century satirical illustration. The hand-applied colour is restrained, drawing attention to the man's red scarf and the multicoloured stripes of his bag, which provide a sharp contrast to the muted tones of his clothing and the surrounding architecture.
Monnier was well known for his ability to document the manners and habits of his contemporaries. His work often functioned as a social commentary, stripping away the pretences of the middle class to reveal the underlying ironies of their daily existence. This print is an example of the popular graphic satire that circulated in Paris during the 1830s, providing a window into the humour and social anxieties of the era. The piece remains a clear record of the graphic techniques used in early nineteenth-century printmaking, where lithography allowed for the rapid dissemination of political and social critique to a wide audience.
