This woodblock print originates from the collection titled The Surface of the Water (Mizu no omo shū), attributed to the artist Komatsubara Suikei. The work reflects the conventions of Japanese book illustration during the late Edo period, where text and image share the page to create a unified narrative experience. The composition is divided across two pages, depicting figures in traditional courtly attire engaged in a social or literary gathering.
The artist employs a flattened perspective, typical of the period, which allows the viewer to observe the interior space from an elevated vantage point. The figures are rendered with delicate line work, focusing on the patterns of their kimonos and their distinct postures.
