A 1887 woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada III depicting the modernisation of Japan through Western-style architecture and formal diplomatic attire.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada III, produced in 1887, captures the cultural shifts occurring during the Meiji period in Japan. The work is divided into two distinct registers, each documenting the adoption of Western-style architecture, fashion, and diplomatic protocol. The upper panel depicts a group of men in formal military uniforms standing before a Western-style building, complete with a fountain and manicured grounds. This scene reflects the rapid modernisation of Japanese public spaces and the integration of European aesthetic influences into the urban environment.
The lower panel presents an interior view of a palace reception. Here, figures are dressed in Victorian-era evening attire, including floor-length gowns and formal suits with sashes. The setting features heavy red curtains and ornate carpeting, elements that signify the adoption of Western diplomatic customs within the Japanese imperial court. The composition maintains the traditional flat perspective common to woodblock prints, yet the subject matter is entirely focused on the new, globalised identity of the Meiji state.
Utagawa Kunisada III, also known as Baidō Hōsai, was active during a time when traditional printmaking techniques were being adapted to record contemporary events. This print serves as a visual record of the Meiji government's efforts to project an image of parity with Western powers. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted greens, soft pinks, and deep reds to delineate the architectural and sartorial details. The work provides a clear view into the social aspirations of the late nineteenth-century Japanese elite, documenting the transition from feudal traditions to a modern, cosmopolitan society. It remains a valuable object for those interested in the intersection of traditional Japanese print culture and the rapid political changes of the late nineteenth century.
