A serene woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting the reflection of Mount Fuji on the calm waters of Lake Misaka.
Katsushika Hokusai produced this woodblock print as part of his series, Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. The composition depicts the reflection of Mount Fuji upon the still waters of Lake Misaka in Koshu Province. Unlike many other prints in the series that focus on the mountain as a distant or imposing peak, this work emphasises the interplay between the mountain and its mirror image on the water surface. The artist employs a deliberate contrast between the static, snow-capped peak and the gentle ripples of the lake.
The colour palette relies heavily on the use of Prussian blue, a pigment that became available in Japan during this period and allowed for the deep, saturated tones seen in the sky and water. The surrounding hills are rendered in shades of green, providing a natural frame for the central subject. Small thatched-roof dwellings are nestled among the trees, adding a human element to the scene. A single boat drifts on the right, providing a sense of scale and quietude.
Hokusai utilised the woodblock technique to achieve clean lines and flat areas of colour, which are characteristic of the Ukiyo-e style. The print demonstrates his ability to capture a specific atmospheric condition through simplified forms and balanced composition. Katsushika Hokusai
Katsushika Hokusai was a visionary Japanese artist whose influence stretched far beyond his lifetime.
