A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, depicting travellers in palanquins at the Hakone station along the historic Tokaido road.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts the tenth station of the Tokaido road, Hakone. The composition captures a group of travellers navigating the mountainous terrain, a common sight for those journeying between Edo and Kyoto during the Edo period. Hokusai employs a clear, graphic style, focusing on the rhythmic movement of the porters carrying palanquins, or kago, through the rugged environment.
The scene is defined by its balanced use of space and simplified forms. The distant mountains provide a backdrop to the foreground activity, where the figures are rendered with precise, clean lines. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft ochres, muted greens, and subtle pinks to delineate the terrain and the clothing of the travellers. This approach reflects the aesthetic priorities of the Ukiyo-e tradition, which often sought to document the daily life and travel experiences of the Japanese public.
Unlike the later, more famous series by Utagawa Hiroshige, Hokusai's interpretation of the Tokaido road offers a distinct perspective on the journey. His work here emphasises the physical exertion of the porters and the practicalities of travel in the early nineteenth century. The print serves as a record of the infrastructure and social customs of the time, documenting the reliance on human-powered transport in difficult geography. The inclusion of the small structure on the right provides a sense of scale and human presence within the vast, open environment. This print is a representative example of Hokusai's ability to synthesise observation with the stylistic conventions of the woodblock medium, resulting in a clear and informative visual narrative.
