A nineteenth-century etching by Henry Louis Basan, reproducing Rembrandt's dramatic depiction of the martyrdom of Saint Stephen.
This etching by Henry Louis Basan depicts the martyrdom of Saint Stephen, a scene derived from the original 1635 work by Rembrandt van Rijn. Basan, a French printmaker, produced this plate as part of a series of reproductions intended to disseminate the compositions of the Dutch master to a wider audience. The composition captures the chaotic and violent moment of the stoning, with the central figure of Stephen kneeling in supplication while his executioners prepare to cast stones.
Basan employs a technique that mimics the expressive line work of the original etching. The figures are rendered with a focus on dramatic tension and the interplay of light and shadow, which is characteristic of the Baroque style that Rembrandt pioneered. The background remains relatively sparse, allowing the viewer to focus on the emotional intensity of the central group. The executioners are depicted in various states of exertion, their forms overlapping to create a sense of crowded movement.
As a reproduction, this print offers insight into the nineteenth-century practice of copying master works to preserve their composition for study and collection. The etching retains the signature of the original artist in the lower left corner, a common convention in such reproductive prints. The work demonstrates the technical proficiency required to translate the tonal qualities of an original etching into a new plate. It remains a clear example of the historical interest in Dutch Golden Age art during the nineteenth century, providing a window into how these narratives were interpreted and circulated by later printmakers. The print is presented on high-quality paper, maintaining the clarity of the original etched lines and the subtle shading that defines the figures.
