A detailed seventeenth-century ink and wash drawing depicting the martyrdom of Saint Stephen, executed with the dramatic flair characteristic of the Dutch Golden Age.
Willem de Poorter, a Dutch painter active in Haarlem, produced this work during the mid-seventeenth century. The composition depicts the martyrdom of Saint Stephen, a narrative drawn from the Acts of the Apostles. De Poorter employs a monochromatic palette of brown ink and wash, a technique common among Dutch draughtsmen of the period to establish atmospheric depth and focus on the dramatic interplay of light and shadow.
The scene is organised with the kneeling figure of Saint Stephen at the centre, his gaze directed upward toward a celestial opening in the clouds. Above, a group of putti descends, suggesting divine intervention or the reception of the martyr into heaven. To the left, the architectural ruins of a city gate provide a sense of historical setting, while the figures of the executioners are arranged in active, dynamic poses. The artist uses varied line weights to define the foreground figures, contrasting them against the lighter, more gestural washes that describe the distant city and the sky.
De Poorter was influenced by the circle of Rembrandt, which is evident in the theatrical staging of the event and the expressive handling of the figures. The work avoids excessive ornamentation, relying instead on the clarity of the narrative and the fluid application of wash to guide the viewer across the scene. The presence of the large tree on the left serves to frame the composition, creating a natural boundary that draws the eye toward the central action. This drawing reflects the technical proficiency of the era, where ink and wash were used to capture both the physical weight of the figures and the ethereal quality of the light from above.
