The Staircase Group is a trompe l'oeil painting by Charles Willson Peale, depicting two of his sons, Raphael and Titian Ramsey Peale. The composition is constructed to deceive the eye, as the figures appear to ascend a wooden staircase that extends into the viewer's own space. Peale even incorporated a physical wooden step at the base of the frame to enhance this illusion.

Raphael, the elder son, is shown in the foreground holding a palette and maulstick, identifying him as an artist. Titian, positioned slightly behind and above, gazes out toward the viewer. The lighting is controlled, casting soft shadows against the wall, which is decorated with a subtle, repeating pattern. The palette is restrained, focusing on the natural tones of the clothing and the warm wood of the staircase.

This work demonstrates Peale's interest in scientific observation and the mechanics of human perception. By blurring the boundary between the painted surface and the physical environment, the artist invites the viewer to engage with the canvas as a three-dimensional object. The painting was famously displayed in a doorway at the Peale Museum in Philadelphia, where it reportedly fooled visitors into believing the two men were actually climbing the stairs.
