Jacques-Louis David painted this portrait of Anne Marie Louise Thélusson, Countess of Sorcy, in 1790. The work captures the subject in a seated position, reflecting the shift in French portraiture towards a more naturalistic and restrained aesthetic during the late eighteenth century. The Countess is depicted wearing a simple white muslin dress, a style influenced by the prevailing interest in classical antiquity and the rejection of the elaborate, restrictive fashions of the Ancien Régime.
