A satirical 1809 engraving by Thomas Cook, reproducing William Hogarth's humorous depiction of a drowsy church congregation.
This print is an engraving by Thomas Cook, based on the original 1736 painting by William Hogarth. Cook was a prolific engraver who dedicated much of his career to reproducing Hogarth's moralising works for a wider audience. This specific plate was published in 1809 as part of a larger collection of Hogarth's works.
The scene depicts a drowsy church service, a common subject for 18th-century social commentary. A clergyman delivers a sermon from a high pulpit, while the congregation below has succumbed to slumber. The composition is structured around the contrast between the preacher's earnest, if dull, delivery and the physical comedy of the sleeping parishioners. One woman in the foreground is particularly notable, her head tilted back in deep sleep, providing a humorous counterpoint to the religious setting.
Technically, the work employs fine cross-hatching and stippling to create depth and texture within the church interior. The architectural details, such as the gothic windows and the heavy wooden pews, are rendered with precision. Cook's ability to translate Hogarth's expressive character studies into the medium of print allowed these satirical observations to reach a broad public. The work functions as a critique of the lethargy and lack of engagement within the established church of the period. It captures a moment of human fallibility, presented with the dry wit characteristic of the Georgian era. The print remains a clear example of the collaborative relationship between painter and engraver in the 18th and 19th centuries, where the reproduction of art served both educational and entertainment purposes for the British public.
