A detailed woodblock print of a pufferfish from the 1798 publication 'The Servants of the Dragon King of the Sea' by Kuwagata Keisai.
This woodblock print originates from the 1798 publication 'The Servants of the Dragon King of the Sea: Fish and Shells' (Tatsu no miyatsuko gyokai fu), a notable example of Japanese natural history illustration from the Edo period. Kuwagata Keisai, a pupil of Kitao Shigemasa, was known for his ability to combine technical precision with a refined aesthetic sensibility. This specific plate depicts a pufferfish, rendered with careful attention to its anatomical features, including the characteristic skin texture and fin structure.
The composition is typical of the period's interest in documenting the natural world through a blend of scientific observation and artistic tradition. The fish is presented in profile, spanning the central gutter of the book, which allows for a detailed examination of its form. The surrounding calligraphy provides context, linking the visual representation to the literary and cultural traditions of the time. The use of a muted colour palette, dominated by ink tones with subtle accents, reflects the printing techniques available to artists in late 18th-century Japan.
Kuwagata Keisai, also known as Kitao Masayoshi, transitioned from his early work in ukiyo-e to a more individualistic style that favoured simplicity and clarity. This work demonstrates his skill in capturing the essence of his subject without unnecessary ornamentation. The print serves as a record of the marine life known to the Japanese public during this era, presented with the clarity and balance that define Keisai's approach to illustration. The paper texture and the visible binding of the original book format are preserved in this museum-grade reproduction, offering an authentic view of the historical publication.
