A detailed woodblock print from a nineteenth-century Japanese manual on ikebana, featuring two distinct floral arrangements in traditional vessels.
This woodblock print originates from a Japanese instructional manual on ikebana, the traditional art of flower arrangement. Yoshida Tōgetsu provides a visual record of specific floral compositions, documenting the precise placement and balance required for these arrangements. The work reflects the aesthetic values of the Edo period, where the study of nature and the discipline of arrangement were central to cultural life.
The print features two distinct arrangements. On the left, a pine-based composition is set within a wide, shallow basin. The artist uses fine, controlled lines to suggest the texture of the pine needles and the structure of the branches. On the right, a more delicate arrangement of narcissus is presented in a slender vase, placed upon a low, patterned stand. The composition is sparse, focusing on the negative space surrounding the plants to draw the viewer's attention to the form of the stems and blossoms.
Technically, the print demonstrates the precision of Japanese woodblock printing. The lines are clean and uniform, characteristic of instructional texts intended for wide distribution among students of the arts. The inclusion of Japanese calligraphy provides context for the specific arrangements, naming the plants and perhaps the school of ikebana associated with the design. The paper shows the natural ageing typical of historical woodblock prints, with a warm, off-white tone that complements the black ink. This piece is a functional document of historical design, offering a glimpse into the domestic and artistic practices of nineteenth-century Japan. It is suitable for those interested in the history of botanical illustration, traditional Japanese aesthetics, or the evolution of floral design.
