Paul Cézanne painted this view of the Mediterranean coast during his stays in l'Estaque, a small fishing village near Marseille. The composition is framed by the dark, curving trunks of pine trees in the foreground, which act as a screen to the scene beyond. Through this natural frame, the viewer observes a cluster of terracotta-roofed houses and a prominent industrial chimney, set against the expansive, muted blue of the sea and sky.
Cézanne employs a structured approach to the canvas, using short, deliberate brushstrokes to build form and volume. Rather than capturing the fleeting light effects favoured by the Impressionists, he focuses on the underlying geometry of the scene. The houses are reduced to simplified blocks, and the sea is rendered in flat, horizontal planes of colour. His landscapes, still lifes, and portraits, such as "The Basket of Apples" and "Mont Sainte-Victoire," reveal a profound engagement with form and perception.
Though initially met with ridicule and rejection by the Salon, Cézanne's relentless experimentation paved the way for modern art movements like Cubism and Fauvism. Artists like Picasso and Matisse revered him as a forefather, recognising his revolutionary approach to depicting the world.
