Paul Cézanne returned frequently to the Jas de Bouffan, his family estate near Aix-en-Provence, to paint the grounds. This specific composition captures the quiet atmosphere of the property, focusing on the house framed by the heavy, overhanging branches of mature trees. The artist employs a palette of earthy ochres, deep greens, and muted browns to describe the architecture and the surrounding foliage.
Cézanne constructs the scene through distinct, rhythmic brushstrokes. These marks build the form of the house and the texture of the bark, creating a sense of solidity that departs from the fleeting light effects favoured by his Impressionist contemporaries.
