Attributed to Iwasa Matabei, a figure associated with the transition from the Momoyama to the early Edo period, the piece reflects the artist's distinct approach to the traditional Yamato-e style. Matabei is often credited with developing the Ukiyo-e aesthetic, yet his work here remains firmly grounded in classical portraiture traditions.
The poet is shown in a seated posture, wearing formal court attire. His robes are rendered with subtle blue and gold tones, featuring a checked pattern on the lower garments. The figure is positioned centrally, surrounded by calligraphic inscriptions of his poetry. The brushwork is precise, capturing the facial features with a degree of individual characterisation that distinguishes Matabei's portraits from more stylised predecessors. The surrounding border displays a geometric pattern, providing a structured frame for the central figure.
Matabei's style is characterised by a blend of classical Japanese themes and a more direct, observational approach to human form.
