This work depicts the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals, a group of Japanese poets from the Nara, Heian, and Kamakura periods selected by the courtier Fujiwara no Kinto. The composition follows the traditional Yamato-e style, which prioritises Japanese subjects and aesthetic sensibilities over imported Chinese models. The figures are arranged across a gold-leaf background, a hallmark of the Momoyama period, which provided a luminous surface to reflect light in dimly lit interior spaces.

The Kano school, to which this studio belonged, held a dominant position in Japanese painting for centuries. By the time of Kano Takanobu, the school had successfully integrated the bold, expressive brushwork of the Chinese ink tradition with the decorative, colourful requirements of the Japanese aristocracy. Each poet is rendered with individualised facial features and specific courtly attire, reflecting their historical status. Above the figures, calligraphic inscriptions record the poems associated with each immortal, blending visual art with literature in a format known as 'kasen-e'.

The use of negative space and the balanced distribution of the figures across the panels create a sense of order and hierarchy. The muted tones of the robes contrast with the metallic ground, ensuring that the focus remains on the figures and the accompanying text. This piece represents a period when the Kano school moved towards a more refined, decorative approach to satisfy the tastes of the military elite and the imperial court. The preservation of such works allows for an examination of the intersection between classical poetry and visual representation in early modern Japan. The composition is structured to be read from right to left, following the traditional flow of Japanese text and narrative imagery.
