Painted in 1866, The Origin of the World is a work by the French Realist painter Gustave Courbet. The composition focuses on the torso and thighs of a reclining woman, with the head and lower legs cropped from the frame. The artist employs a palette of muted flesh tones, contrasted against the dark, textured rendering of the subject's pubic hair and the white drapery that frames the figure.
Courbet was a central figure in the Realist movement, which rejected the idealised subjects common in the academic art of the nineteenth century. This painting, commissioned by the Turkish-Egyptian diplomat Khalil-Bey, remained in private collections for over a century. It was not exhibited publicly until 1988, when it entered the collection of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. The work is notable for its directness and its refusal to provide a narrative or allegorical context for the viewer. By removing the face and extremities, Courbet forces the observer to confront the physical reality of the body without the mediation of traditional portraiture conventions.

His nudes, like 'The Bathers', scandalised Parisian society, not for their nudity, but for their unapologetic lack of idealisation.
