This woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai depicts the Oiran Sugawara of the Tsuru-ya establishment. The composition centres on the courtesan and her attendants gathered around a hibachi, a traditional Japanese heating device. The artist employs a refined line quality to delineate the elaborate hairstyles and the layered kimono fabrics, which are decorated with subtle patterns. The scene captures a quiet moment of domesticity within the Yoshiwara pleasure district, a common subject for Ukiyo-e artists of the eighteenth century.
Koryūsai was a samurai who transitioned to a career as a printmaker, and his work often displays a high degree of technical precision. The figures are rendered with the elongated proportions characteristic of his style during this period. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft earth tones and muted reds to create a sense of harmony. The hibachi, supported by decorative feet, acts as the physical anchor for the three figures. The attendants are shown in various states of engagement, one reading a document while the other observes, adding a narrative layer to the static scene. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to balance negative space with the detailed rendering of textiles and personal adornment.
As a practitioner of the Bijin-ga genre, which focuses on images of beautiful women, Koryūsai contributed to the development of the full-colour print, or nishiki-e. This particular work reflects the aesthetic values of the Edo period, where the lives of high-ranking courtesans were documented with both admiration and artistic scrutiny. The print remains a clear example of the formalised beauty standards and the material culture of the time, presented through the medium of traditional Japanese woodblock printing.
