A woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting the poet Minamoto no Toru in a serene evening setting, from the series Mirrors of Japanese and Chinese Poems.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai belongs to the series Mirrors of Japanese and Chinese Poems, known in Japanese as Shiika shashinkyo. The work depicts Minamoto no Toru, a ninth-century courtier and poet, standing near the shore of the Kawara-no-in, his residence in Kyoto. Hokusai captures the figure in a moment of quiet contemplation, accompanied by two attendants. The composition balances the human subjects with the natural environment, featuring a crescent moon hanging in the evening sky above a distant mountain range.
The print demonstrates Hokusai's mastery of the chuban format. The colour palette is restrained, utilising soft greens, muted blues, and earthy tones to evoke the atmosphere of a twilight scene. The figures are dressed in traditional court attire, their robes decorated with subtle patterns that reflect their status. The inclusion of small boats on the water and the textured representation of the pine trees in the foreground add depth to the scene, guiding the viewer's eye across the composition.
Technically, the print exhibits the precision characteristic of Hokusai's later career. The lines are clean and deliberate, defining the contours of the figures and the organic shapes of the terrain. The use of colour gradients in the sky, a technique known as bokashi, creates a smooth transition from the deep blue of the upper register to the lighter horizon. This work functions as a visual interpretation of classical poetry, bridging the gap between literary tradition and the visual arts of the Edo period. It remains a clear example of the artist's ability to synthesise narrative elements with atmospheric observation, providing a window into the aesthetic values of nineteenth-century Japan.
